What a camera at a feeder misses
A feeder camera can only see what comes to the feeder. That sounds obvious until you count up how much it leaves out. Most birds never visit a feeder at all. Warblers, wrens, vireos, woodpeckers, the hawk that just cleared the yard, the owl calling after dark: none of them are landing on a seed tray, so the camera will never log a single one. Bird Buddy knows this, which is why the Bird Buddy 2 bolted on a microphone. That patches the blind spot and leaves the rest alone: the feeder still has to be out there, filled, and on Wi-Fi, and the name still arrives as a notification on your phone.
ChirpSense skips the feeder entirely. If a bird sings within earshot of the window, it hears it, from the oak out back to the flock passing over on migration, and the name goes up on the screen in the room. You end up with a truer sense of what's actually around you, not just a tally of who turned up hungry, and you get it without picking up your phone.

Of course, and plenty of people will. Do I need Wi-Fi or an app?
For ChirpSense, no. Identification runs on the device, offline, and Wi-Fi only matters when there's a library update. Bird Buddy needs Wi-Fi and its app to do anything useful, because the photos and song IDs it collects have to reach your phone somehow.
