Merlin or ChirpSense? Wrong question. Merlin is a free app you take out when you want to identify a bird. ChirpSense is a small display that sits by your window and does the listening for you all day, without being asked. One is a tool you operate. The other just runs.
If you already use Merlin, keep it. We're not going to try to talk anyone out of a free app from the Cornell Lab, which would be a daft thing to attempt. What this page is about is the one job Merlin was never meant to do, and why we built a separate box to do it.
Give Merlin its due
Merlin Bird ID is a free app from the Cornell Lab. Sound ID listens through your phone's mic and names birds while you hold it up, and it does that well. It also does things ChirpSense doesn't: photo identification, a guided wizard that walks you from size and color down to a species, a library that runs into the thousands worldwide, and a link to eBird so your sightings build a life list.
All of that is field work: you, outside, phone up, chasing a call. ChirpSense doesn't do field work and we never built it to. It does the one job Merlin can't: it sits on the sill and listens all day, then shows you the answer without a phone in your hand. Merlin stops the moment you lock the screen. That's the whole difference.

Where an app comes up short at home
Here's the snag with any phone app, Merlin included: it only listens while you're holding it. You take the phone out, open the app, point it at the trees, and stay there. Lock the screen or jump to a text and it quits. That's fine for a deliberate ten minutes in the park. It does nothing for the other fifteen hours of the day, when something strikes up outside the kitchen window and your phone is charging in another room.
There's also the thing nobody likes to admit. Merlin lives on the phone most of us are already trying to touch less. Reaching for the device that buzzes with email and group chats, just to learn that a chickadee dropped by, kills half the pleasure.
ChirpSense gets around all of that by not being a phone. It's a dedicated display with its own mic and its own screen. It listens to the birds around your home, checks them against an offline library of 350+ backyard species, and shows who's singing without anyone pressing record. You look up from the sink and it already reads Carolina wren, 7:12. That's the whole product.
So which one?
Want a field companion and a life list? That's Merlin's job, and it lives in your pocket, which is fine on a trail and useless at the kitchen window.
Want to know who's singing while you make breakfast, with nothing to open and nothing to hold? That's the gap we built ChirpSense to fill. Merlin can't fill it from a pocket, and it was never meant to.

What can Merlin do that ChirpSense can't?
Plenty, and none of it is the job we built for. Merlin has a far bigger species list, photo ID, a guided "what did you see" wizard, and it ties into eBird for life lists. ChirpSense does none of that, on purpose. It isn't a birding database. It's a quiet display that tells you who's singing outside, all day, without a phone, which is the one thing Merlin can't do.
Do I have to keep an app open like I do with Merlin?
No, and that's the point of the whole thing. Merlin listens only while the app is open and the screen is on. Lock the phone and it stops. ChirpSense never needs opening. You plug it in once and it keeps listening in the background while you get on with your day.
